Manchester City are waiting on the injury sustained by Fabian Delph in England’s latest European Qualifier against Switzerland on Tuesday evening. He is set to have a scan on his hamstring to assess the problem.
City’s summer signing pulled the muscle less than twenty seconds into the game at Wembley, prompting major concerns regarding his fitness levels after having just returned from another hamstring injury he picked up in pre-season against Real Madrid.
Delph is yet to make a start for the Blues this term due to this persistent problem; being limited to just appearances from the bench in wins over Everton and Watford respectively. After the game against the Hornets it looked like the former Aston Villa man was on the mend, but it took him just under a minute last night to reignite the issue that has made his start to life in Manchester painfully frustrating.
“Roy Hodgson said that the England medical staff had no notion that Fabian Delph was close to his unusually early breakdown which came nine seconds into the game against Switzerland and could mean another lay-off for the new Manchester City midfielder” report The Independent.
“Restored to the starting line-up, Delph pulled up almost immediately as he challenged for the ball and was replaced with Ross Barkley. Hodgson said that Delph had warmed up as usual and showed no signs of weakness in the days before the match.”
England manager Roy Hodgson added: “He pulled his hamstring. No, [Delph was] not [a concern] at all. He’s trained every session, felt good, played in San Marino. It was just that burst, that acceleration. He felt it’s a definite pull. How serious, a scan will have to show us.”
“We’re very disappointed, as is he. It’s not something that we could have prevented because there was no risk putting him on the field. I can’t remember having to make a change before after nine seconds. It robbed us of one early on. It gave us a chance to play Ross Barkley, who had been unlucky to lose his place.”
Delph is now highly unlikely to have a place in the squad for this Saturday’s visit to Crystal Palace, but it is unsure how long after this he will be out for. Make sure you stay with us @ReadManCity as we will bring you the very latest news regarding this story.
Let’s hope Fabian makes a quick recovery.
