Nico O’Reilly has returned to Man City for further assessment after withdrawing from the England squad.
The 21-year-old will play no part in the remainder of the international break after leaving Thomas Tuchel’s camp in Croatia. England confirmed O’Reilly’s departure on Thursday afternoon, with the City player now heading back to Manchester.
O’Reilly returns after minor fitness issue
O’Reilly played the full 90 minutes of England’s 3-2 defeat against Spain at Wembley on Saturday but subsequently missed training because of what Tuchel described as a “minor” issue.
He was then unavailable for Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Czechia in Prague, with Tuchel saying beforehand that O’Reilly would need to be assessed before a decision was made on his involvement.
England have now confirmed that he has left the squad and returned to City for further assessment. The precise nature of the problem hasn’t been disclosed, so there is no indication yet of how long O’Reilly could be unavailable.
That will be the main concern for Enzo Maresca, with City returning to Premier League action against Liverpool after the international break. O’Reilly had been due to remain with England for Nations League games against Croatia on Saturday and Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday.
