Haaland and Dias go head-to-head as Norway face Portugal today

Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias could find themselves in direct opposition tonight as Norway host Portugal in the UEFA Nations League.

The two Man City captains are both with their countries during the international break and could come up against each other at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo. Haaland heads into the game after scoring twice in Norway’s opening Nations League fixture against Denmark on Thursday night.

Haaland heads into Portugal game after Denmark double

The City striker completed the full 90 minutes as Norway beat Denmark 3-2 in Oslo. Former City winger Oscar Bobb opened the scoring before Haaland struck twice as Norway began their League A campaign with three points.

Portugal now provide Haaland with a rather familiar obstacle. Dias played the full 90 minutes in his country’s opening fixture against Wales and could be part of the defence charged with stopping the striker he usually lines up alongside in Manchester.

Both players are part of City’s captaincy group, adding another layer to their potential meeting tonight.

Haaland could face Ronaldo for first time

The game also brings together two of Europe’s most prolific international goalscorers. Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo have never previously faced each other in a senior international.

Ronaldo remains in the Portugal squad at the age of 41 and was involved against Wales on Thursday, while Haaland arrives having already scored twice in this Nations League campaign. For City supporters, however, the Haaland-Dias contest provides the more familiar subplot.

If both start, Dias will know rather more than most about the threat posed by Norway’s No.9.

Tonight’s game is the second Nations League fixture of the international break for both Haaland and Dias. It will not be their only opportunity to face each other, either. Portugal host Norway on 4 October before both players return to Manchester and attention switches back to club football.

For now, City supporters have the unusual prospect of watching two of the club’s captains trying to get the better of each other in Oslo.
