Man City Women came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in their Women’s Champions League opener on Tuesday night.
Giulia Gwinn and a Kerstin Casparij own goal left City with a mountain to climb before Beth Mead pulled one back on the stroke of half-time. Khadija Shaw then had a penalty saved, but Carlotta Wamser struck four minutes from time to earn Andree Jeglertz’s side a point.
Man City player ratings v Bayern Munich
Ayaka Yamashita – 7
Little she could do about either Bayern goal and made some useful saves as the hosts repeatedly found openings during the first half. City could easily have been further behind before Mead gave them a route back into the game.
Kerstin Casparij – 6
A difficult one to mark. Turned Pernille Harder’s cross into her own net for Bayern’s second and was booked after the break, but her run down the right started the move from which Mead scored. A mixed night rather than a bad one.
Jade Rose – 6
A demanding Champions League debut against a Bayern attack that caused City plenty of early problems. Had some uncomfortable moments but improved as the game became more even after half-time.
Alex Greenwood – 6.5
City’s captain had plenty to deal with as Bayern cut through them during the opening half-hour. Helped steady the defence later and City survived another late Bayern push after making it 2-2.
Carlotta Wamser – 8
The standout moment belonged to her. Wamser had been tested defensively on her return to Germany but kept going and took her chance superbly in the 86th minute, finding the near corner for her first City goal.
Yui Hasegawa – 6.5
Bayern dominated central areas early and made life difficult for City’s midfield. Hasegawa gradually found more influence as City settled and was much more effective during the improved second half.
Sam Coffey – 6
Another player who found Bayern’s opening spell difficult. Worked hard in midfield without City ever establishing enough control and made way for Laura Blindkilde Brown after 63 minutes.
Lauren Hemp – 7
One of City’s few threats during their poorest spell, with a deflected cross clipping the top of the bar. Continued to offer an outlet when Bayern’s pressure made it difficult for City to play through midfield.
Beth Mead – 7.5
Exactly where City needed her just before half-time, turning home from close range for her first goal for the club. It changed the scoreline at a point when Bayern had threatened to run away with the game.
Aoba Fujino – 7
Won the second-half penalty after being brought down by Ena Mahmutovic and later saw an effort deflected narrowly wide. One of City’s livelier attacking players as the game opened up.
Khadija Shaw – 5.5
Not her night. Her blocked effort eventually led to Mead’s goal, but the penalty miss was the big opportunity and she was replaced immediately afterwards. The Guardian also noted that she had struggled before being withdrawn.
Substitutes
Laura Blindkilde Brown – 7.5
Made a difference after replacing Coffey and supplied the pass for Wamser’s equaliser. A very good half-hour from the bench.
Mary Fowler – 6.5
Replaced Shaw after the penalty miss and gave City fresh legs as Bayern began to leave more space. Part of a triple change that helped shift the game City’s way.
Grace Clinton – 6.5
On for Mead with 15 minutes remaining and helped City maintain their push for the equaliser. A useful Champions League debut without one defining moment.
City became the first English side to avoid defeat away to Bayern in European competition, having looked in serious danger of leaving Munich empty-handed during the first half.
The comeback also earns a place alongside some of City’s memorable recoveries, although this time the reward was a point rather than a victory.
