Rob Jones has been appointed referee for Man City’s Premier League meeting with Sunderland at the Etihad on Sunday.
Enzo Maresca’s side return to league action three days after their Carabao Cup tie against Norwich, with the Sunderland game moved from its original Saturday slot because of City’s involvement in that competition.
The Premier League has also confirmed the VAR appointment for the 2pm kick-off, with Michael Salisbury in charge at Stockley Park.
Rob Jones appointed for Man City v Sunderland
Jones will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Constantine Hatzidakis, while Andy Madley has been named as fourth official.
Salisbury will be assisted on VAR duty by Neil Davies.
- Referee: Rob Jones
- Assistant referees: Gary Beswick and Constantine Hatzidakis
- Fourth official: Andy Madley
- VAR: Michael Salisbury
- Assistant VAR: Neil Davies
Jones has refereed twice in the Premier League so far this season, showing nine yellow cards and no reds.
That gives him an early average of 4.5 yellow cards per game, although two matches is far too small a sample to read much into those figures.
VAR returns after Norwich cup tie
There was no VAR for City’s Carabao Cup meeting with Norwich on Thursday night, when Ruebyn Ricardo was the referee.
We looked at the officials for the Norwich game here, but Premier League rules mean video technology will be back in operation against Sunderland. Its return comes after a week in which VAR has been a major talking point around City.
The audio from Sunday’s Manchester derby revealed that Erling Haaland’s winning goal should have been disallowed after Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position, interfered with Lisandro Martinez before Haaland scored.
VAR Matt Donohue checked Haaland’s position, but the earlier involvement of Fernandez was missed.
