Erling Haaland leads striker charts as City benchmark emerges

Erling Haaland remains out in front in the Premier League scoring charts – although an unusual decision has changed the picture immediately behind the Man City striker.

Former Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has had his league tally for Leeds United increased to three after the Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel awarded him a goal from Monday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle. That leaves Calvert-Lewin behind only Haaland in the early standings and continues an impressive revival at Elland Road.

Calvert-Lewin closes in on Haaland

Calvert-Lewin has scored nine times in 15 appearances in all competitions since April and three in his opening four Premier League games this season.

Daniel Farke described him as being in “outstanding shape” following the Newcastle win, while Jamie Carragher believes the move to Leeds has rejuvenated the 29-year-old. The numbers in Sky Sports’ analysis go beyond his goals. Calvert-Lewin is joint-top of the Premier League for aerials won and also ranks among the division’s top 10 for runs in behind.

Haaland remains the man at the top, but another striker featured in the same analysis is rather more immediately relevant to Man City.

Brobbey gives City something to think about

Brian Brobbey will lead Sunderland’s attack at the Etihad on Sunday having produced an impressive display against Arsenal last weekend. He is yet to score in the Premier League this season, but Sky’s data shows no player has recorded more hold-ups – retaining possession while shielding the ball from a defender – than Brobbey.

He topped the same measure last season despite starting only 22 games. Regis Le Bris was particularly pleased with Brobbey’s work against Arsenal, saying the performance showed he could compete even against the strongest sides.

That physical battle could be an interesting part of Sunday’s game, particularly if Sunderland use Brobbey as an outlet when City have them pinned back.

There is another City angle in the same Sky analysis.

Elliot Anderson’s early numbers following his £116m move from Nottingham Forest are strikingly similar to Rodri’s last season for passes, passes in the final third and duels won.

Anderson was excellent in City’s 1-0 derby victory at Manchester United and could have an important job on Sunday in preventing Sunderland from finding Brobbey quickly when possession changes hands. Haaland and the scoring chart provide the headline.

Brobbey against City’s defence might be the more interesting contest this weekend.
