Barcelona and Real Madrid believe Erling Haaland could consider Man City exit

Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly believe Erling Haaland could consider leaving City for Spain in 2027.

City have become accustomed to speculation surrounding their prolific striker, despite Haaland signing an extraordinary long-term contract at the Etihad. But TEAMtalk transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey has now reported that both Spanish giants are looking towards 2027 as a potentially significant summer.

Barcelona and Real Madrid retain Erling Haaland belief

According to TEAMtalk, Barcelona and Real Madrid are moving forward with the belief that Haaland could consider a move to Spain in 2027. That is some distance from saying Haaland has decided to leave City, however, and there is no suggestion in the report that he has asked for a transfer.

There is also the rather substantial matter of his contract. Haaland signed a nine-and-a-half-year agreement in January 2025 which ties him to City until the summer of 2034. Sky Sports reported at the time that the deal contained no release clauses.

City went even further when speculation resurfaced in June, publicly insisting there was “no chance” of Haaland leaving and saying there was “no contractual clause to enable it”.

TEAMtalk have reported a different understanding, claiming sources close to Barcelona and Real Madrid believe mechanisms exist within the agreement which could eventually facilitate a departure. For now, that remains a claim rather than something confirmed by City.

The interest from Spain is hardly new. Real Madrid and Barcelona have repeatedly been linked with Haaland, while TEAMtalk reported as far back as November 2025 that 2027 was being viewed as a possible point at which the striker might consider another challenge.

None of that means Haaland intends to leave. He remains contracted to City for another eight years and is central to Enzo Maresca’s plans, with the club having given no indication that their position has changed.

But if Barcelona and Real Madrid really are already working towards 2027, the speculation surrounding City’s No.9 is unlikely to disappear.
