City produced a superb performance with ten men to beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, with Elliot Anderson outstanding in midfield and Erling Haaland scoring the winner.
Phil Foden’s 23rd-minute red card left City facing more than an hour with ten men, but Enzo Maresca’s side refused to buckle, and Haaland struck on the hour to settle the derby.
Here are our City player ratings.
Man City player ratings vs Man Utd
Gianluigi Donnarumma – 8.5
Had the woodwork to thank when Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo went close, but was there when City really needed him. His stoppage-time save from Bryan Mbeumo helped make sure the points went back across Manchester.
Matheus Nunes – 8.5
Another excellent performance at right-back. Strong in his duels, defended aggressively and coped impressively with United trying to make their extra man count down his side.
Marc Guehi – 8.5
Excellent. Read the danger well, made important clearances and rarely looked flustered even when United were throwing players forward late on.
Ruben Dias – 8
Exactly the sort of afternoon on which Dias earns his money. Organised those around him and helped City keep their shape after the sending-off.
Josko Gvardiol – 8.5
Superb defensively and played his part in the winner, with his deflected delivery eventually reaching Haaland. Another big performance from the Croatian.
Elliot Anderson – 9
Our man of the match. Covered an enormous amount of ground after City went down to ten, competed for everything and still had the composure to help his side keep the ball. Outstanding.
Enzo Fernandez – 8.5
Another who seemed to get better as the task became harder. Gave City quality and control in possession and played a huge part in stopping the second half becoming an exercise in survival.
Phil Foden – 3
His afternoon lasted only 23 minutes. Whatever anyone makes of Bruno Fernandes’ role in the incident, Foden reacted and was shown a straight red card, leaving his team-mates with a huge job to do.
Rayan Cherki – 6
A victim of circumstances more than anything else. Showed some nice touches before the break but was sacrificed at half-time as Maresca reshaped his ten men.
Antoine Semenyo – 7
This became a very different job after the red card, and Semenyo put in the work his team needed. Less opportunity to threaten going forward, but plenty of graft without the ball.
Erling Haaland – 8.5
Spent long periods isolated but needed only one proper opportunity. Stayed alive at the far post and finished when Gvardiol’s deflected ball reached him, with VAR overturning the initial offside decision.
SUB: Iliman Ndiaye – 8
An important half-time introduction. Gave City fresh legs, carried the ball when opportunities arose and helped them retain an attacking threat rather than simply retreat.
SUB: Nico O’Reilly – 6.5
Replaced Fernandez for the closing stages and helped City get the job finished.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Elliot Anderson – 9
