Man City player ratings v Coventry: Anderson superb as Fernandez impresses on debut

City made it three Premier League wins from three with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Coventry at the Etihad.

Erling Haaland scored the only goal, but Elliot Anderson was arguably City’s best player, while Enzo Fernández produced an encouraging debut after being drafted into the side following Nico O’Reilly’s warm-up injury.

Here are our ratings.

Starting XI

Gianluigi Donnarumma – 8.5

Far busier than expected. Made several important saves as Coventry grew in confidence and produced a crucial late stop to preserve the clean sheet.

Abdukodir Khusanov – 7

Generally reliable on the right and kept things simple in possession. Had more defending to do late on than City would have wanted.

Rúben Dias – 7

Needed to stay switched on as Coventry pushed late. Read the danger well and helped City get through an uncomfortable final spell.

Marc Guehi – 7.5

Another composed performance. Strong when Coventry attacked the box and looked assured alongside Dias.

Josko Gvardiol – 6.5

A quieter afternoon than usual and not quite as influential going forward. Still contributed to another clean sheet.

Elliot Anderson – 8.5

Excellent yet again. Set the tempo in midfield, used the ball intelligently and was one of the few City players who maintained control throughout.

Enzo Fernandez – 7.5

A very promising debut given the circumstances. Helped start the move for Haaland’s goal and looked comfortable despite only being promoted from the bench shortly before kick-off.

Antoine Semenyo – 7.5

Supplied the decisive cross for Haaland and remained a useful outlet on the right. One of City’s more threatening attacking players.

Rayan Cherki – 7

Hit the post and showed flashes of quality. Not quite as dominant as in the Palace game, but still looked capable of opening Coventry up.

Iliman Ndiaye – 7

A positive debut. Direct, lively and willing to attack defenders. Helped create Foden’s late chance before going off after treatment.

Erling Haaland – 8

Scored the winner with a trademark header, was denied another by Rushworth and had a second ruled out. Not his most dominant display, but impactful, as ever.

Substitutes

Phil Foden – 7

Added some control after replacing Cherki and was unlucky not to score when his effort was cleared off the line.

Ayyoub Bouaddi – 6.5

Came on for Fernández and helped see the game through, although City lost some midfield control late on.

Ryan McAidoo – 6

Only had a few minutes after replacing Ndiaye but brought energy and gave Coventry something else to think about.
