Maresca responds to Elliot Anderson’s bold ‘kings of Manchester’ claim

Enzo Maresca says he understands why Elliot Anderson described City as the “kings of Manchester” ahead of Sunday’s derby at Old Trafford.

Anderson made the claim following his summer move to City, having grown up watching a period in which the Blues became the dominant force in English football. Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has since rejected Anderson’s description, but Maresca believes the midfielder’s age helps explain his view.

“The reason why Elliot said that is because he grew up in the last 15 years,” said Maresca.

Maresca explains Anderson comment

The City boss pointed to the success his new club have enjoyed during Anderson’s lifetime. “I think Manchester City was unbelievable, what they achieved,” he said. “So I think it’s normal when Elliot said that.

“Then if you go back, it’s a different picture. But for me, the reason why Elliot said that is because when he grew up, Manchester City was dominant.” Anderson, 23, was still a child when Sergio Aguero’s famous goal secured City’s first Premier League title in 2012.

He has since watched City win the league eight times in 14 seasons, while United have lifted the title once during that period. Carrick took a different view when asked about Anderson’s comments ahead of the derby, pointing instead to United’s history while stressing the need for his side to remain humble and improve.

There is no ambiguity over where Anderson stands. On Sunday, he gets his first taste of the fixture itself.
