Enzo Maresca has his say on Enzo Fernandez ‘big club’ comment

Enzo Maresca has responded to the debate surrounding Enzo Fernandez’s comments following his £125m move from Chelsea to City.

The Argentinian international attracted attention with one particular line from his first interview after completing the Deadline Day switch to City.

Fernandez said, “I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City”.

The wording inevitably prompted some discussion among Chelsea supporters given Fernandez had spent the previous three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca, though, wasn’t interested in adding anything.

Maresca gives his view

The new City boss pointed out that his new midfielder had hardly come from a small one when he was asked about Fernandez describing City as a big club,

“My view is that he was in a big club at Chelsea and he joins a big club at Man City,” he said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Maresca knows both clubs particularly well after leaving Chelsea for City this summer, and there was little to be gained from turning Fernández’s choice of words into something bigger than it needed to be.

Far more interesting for City supporters was what Maresca had to say about the player himself. The City boss described Fernandez as a “winner” with a “winning mentality”, pointing to his World Cup and Club World Cup successes.

Maresca also revealed that several City players had been asking him during the final days of the transfer window whether Fernandez was going to join them.

After all the noise surrounding the £125m transfer, the focus can now move to what Fernandez does in a City shirt. Maresca has confirmed he is ready to play; that could begin against Coventry today.
