City players were apparently just as keen as supporters to discover whether Enzo Fernández would complete his £125million move from Chelsea.
Enzo Maresca has revealed that several members of his squad were asking about Fernández during the final days of the transfer window because they wanted the Argentina international at the Etihad.
The deal eventually went through on Deadline Day, with Fernández signing a five-year contract.
And he is ready to make his debut against Coventry City on Saturday.
City players were asking about Fernández
Asked about his new signing, Maresca described Fernández as a “winner” before revealing the interest from inside his own dressing room.
“I can promise you that in the last four or five days there were several players asking me if he was coming because they want him here with us,” Maresca said.
The City boss also said the club were “100% happy” to have completed the deal.
Maresca knows Fernández well from their time together at Chelsea, while the midfielder arrives with considerable experience despite being only 25.
He won the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América with Argentina, as well as the Conference League and Club World Cup during his time at Chelsea.
Now comes the first opportunity to see how quickly he settles into Maresca’s new-look City side.
A £125m transfer inevitably brings huge expectations. Maresca’s comments suggest Fernández won’t have to worry about winning over his new team-mates.
