Pep Guardiola has been accused of having “failed” in his attempt to rebuild Man City – despite ending his final season with two trophies.
The claim came from talkSPORT’s Max Scott, who argued that City’s failure to win the Premier League and subsequent changes to the squad meant Guardiola’s rebuild had ultimately been unsuccessful.
It is one interpretation. It’s also the sort of provocative opinion football phone-ins and debate shows are built around.
“He failed in rebuilding Man City,” Scott said.
“They didn’t win the League.
“All the players they brought in, they’re shipping off.”
Guardiola claim gives City fans something to debate…
There is a fair discussion to be had about the final stage of Guardiola’s time at City.
Players arrived as the club attempted to refresh an ageing squad and some have subsequently moved on. City also failed to regain the Premier League title during Guardiola’s final campaign.
Whether that amounts to failure is another matter.
City still ended his final season with two trophies, while Guardiola left after a decade in which the standards and expectations surrounding the club changed beyond recognition.
Scott is entitled to his opinion. talkSPORT is also a station where strong opinions and arguments are part of the ‘attraction’, and describing Guardiola as having failed is certainly going to get people talking.
There is, of course, some irony in us pointing that out while simultaneously writing an article about what he said.
But perhaps that proves the point.
Calling City’s final rebuild imperfect is hardly an outrageous position. Not everything worked, and some expensive decisions can legitimately be questioned.
Declaring that Guardiola “failed” is a much bigger claim.
Given what City achieved during his time at the club, supporters may require rather more convincing.
