Maresca reveals key quality he wants from final Man City signings

Enzo Maresca has made clear that leadership will be part of the Man City thinking as they consider further additions before the transfer window closes.

Maresca has already named Rúben Dias and Erling Haaland as two of his captains, having previously said he would wait until the end of the window before completing his leadership group.

His latest comments suggest City’s remaining business could influence that decision.

“We have experienced players for sure,” he said. “We have leaders.

“Now we need to wait four or five more days to see if we can add one or two more captains to Ruben and Erling, who are the captains.”

Leadership matters in City’s final business…

It is a significant consideration after a summer in which City have lost plenty of experience.

Rodri, Bernardo Silva and John Stones have all departed, taking with them three established figures from a dressing room that has become noticeably younger.

City have invested heavily in 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi and 23-year-old Elliot Anderson, but Maresca appears keen to balance that youth with players capable of taking on responsibility immediately.

Enzo Fernández inevitably comes into the conversation.

City remain interested in the Chelsea midfielder, who worked under Maresca at Stamford Bridge and was part of the leadership group during his time there.

There is nothing in Maresca’s comments to suggest he was specifically referring to Fernández, however, and City continue to consider their options ahead of Monday’s deadline.

What the manager has revealed is the type of character he would like to add.

Ability will obviously come first, but after losing several senior players this summer, City could also do with somebody prepared to take responsibility in the dressing room.

Maresca already has Dias and Haaland.

By the time the window closes, he hopes to have another one or two alongside them.
