Man City player ratings: Anderson debut overshadowed by Community Shield mauling

City player ratings from a chastening 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield, as Enzo Maresca’s first game in charge ended in Cardiff disappointment.

Gianluigi Donnarumma — 5 Beaten inside the first minute and could do little about any of the three goals. A quiet afternoon otherwise, with Arsenal rarely testing him from distance.

Abdukodir Khusanov — 5 Struggled to get a foothold against Arsenal’s left side early on and was withdrawn as Maresca reshuffled after the break.

Rúben Dias (c) — 6 Organised the back line as best he could amid a chaotic start. Steadier once the game settled, but the damage from the opening exchanges was already done.

Joško Gvardiol — 6 One of City’s better performers. Got forward when the chance arose and headed a second-half corner narrowly wide, City’s best sight of goal all afternoon.

Nico O’Reilly — 5 Willing going forward but exposed defensively as Arsenal probed down the flanks in the first half.

Mateo Kovačić — 5 Tidy in possession without ever imposing himself on the game. Arsenal’s midfield trio had the better of the exchanges throughout.

Elliot Anderson — 5 A senior debut to forget in terms of the result, though he showed some promising touches on the ball as he settled into unfamiliar surroundings alongside Kovačić.

Phil Foden — 6 City’s most productive outlet, and the source of the corner that led to Gvardiol’s header. Faded as the game went away from City after the break.

Antoine Semenyo — 5 Industrious without finding much space in behind a well-organised Arsenal back line.

Erling Haaland — 5 Starved of service throughout and flagged offside chasing one of City’s rare chances. A first outing back after the World Cup that never really got going.

Jérémy Doku — 5 Threatened in flashes but couldn’t consistently get past his marker. Withdrawn as City searched for a way back into the game.

Substitutes Jack Grealish, Omar Marmoush, Rayan Cherki and others introduced from the bench added some late impetus, but nothing that troubled David Raya or forced a way back into the contest.
