City are actively exploring a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández as they prepare for significant changes in central midfield, according to The Athletic’s Sam Lee.
With both Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders lined up to leave the club before the transfer window closes, City decision-makers are eager to secure high-calibre options in the middle of the pitch.
Manager Enzo Maresca remains a huge admirer of Fernández following their time together at Stamford Bridge, and City believe the 25-year-old Argentina international has the quality to immediately step into their starting lineup.
However, finalising a deal will prove challenging. Chelsea are holding out for a hefty £120m fee, and the working relationship between the two clubs is currently tricky, which could complicate formal discussions.
Alongside their pursuit of Fernández, City are also continuing to work on a move for Lille’s highly-rated young midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi as part of their broader recruitment strategy.
In contrast, no talks are now being held for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.
Whether City can negotiate Chelsea down from their steep asking price remains uncertain, but their interest in Fernández clearly signals that midfield recruitment is the main priority heading into the final stages of the summer window.
