City midfielder ends exit talk: “I don’t want to leave”

Nico Gonzalez has ruled out a move away from City this summer, ending months of speculation over his future at the Etihad.

Speaking to The Athletic, the Spaniard said he has no intention of leaving despite reported interest in his services. “I’m happy here,” he said. “I don’t want to leave, and I think the club wants me to stay.”

Gonzalez struggled for regular minutes under Pep Guardiola in the second half of last season, making 41 appearances in all competitions but often finding himself out of the side once fit again. He acknowledged as much, saying no player at the club has a starting spot guaranteed. “There is competition in every position. That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”

His comments come as City weigh a broader midfield shake-up, with Rodri’s future the most pressing of the lot amid advancing talks with Barcelona. Mateo Kovacic has also said he expects to stay, while Jeremy Doku has signed a new contract to 2031 — leaving Gonzalez’s calming words a rare piece of certainty in an otherwise shifting picture.

Nico joined City from Porto for around £50m in January 2025 and remains contracted into 2029.
