Why Divin Mubama may have played himself into Maresca’s plans

Divin Mubama could hardly have done much more to strengthen his case during City’s draw with Inter Milan (which they technically lost on penalties).

The 20-year-old took his goal well and was one of City’s brightest performers as Enzo Maresca took charge of the club for the first time. It was only a pre-season shakedown, but those are the moments young players rely on to make an impression.

Mubama’s movement caused problems throughout the game. He pressed with intensity, linked play effectively and looked comfortable against experienced opposition.

City are well stocked in attacking areas, and Erling Haaland obviously remains the club’s undisputed first-choice striker. That means opportunities are likely to be limited once the Premier League season begins.

Even so, Maresca will need options across four competitions, while injuries and rotation are inevitable over the course of a long campaign. Pre-season is often where places in a matchday squad are won, and Mubama appears to have helped his chances.

The former West Ham forward arrived at City with a strong reputation after progressing through the academy in East London. Last season was largely about adapting to a new environment, but this summer feels more like a chance to push on.

Several academy players have been given opportunities during pre-season and Mubama has been among those to make the strongest impression.

One performance will not determine his role for the rest of the season and there is still plenty of football to be played before City’s Premier League opener.

However, if Maresca was looking for players capable of contributing to his plans, Mubama gave him another reason to think carefully before finalising his squad.
