Man City talking points today: exits, reunions and a World Cup flashpoint

A busy day of Man City news across the transfer market and the World Cup — the threads worth pulling together in one place:

Rico Lewis’s Etihad future in doubt

City are prepared to let Rico Lewis leave this summer, with TEAMtalk reporting Nottingham Forest among several clubs showing interest in the 21-year-old academy graduate.

His name was reportedly discussed as part of City’s negotiations over Elliot Anderson’s British-record £116m move from Forest — a reminder of how quickly a homegrown player’s standing can shift once a marquee signing arrives above him.

Rodri and Bernardo Silva’s World Cup reunion turns tense, then warm again

Rodri has apologised to former team-mate Bernardo Silva after the pair clashed on the pitch during Spain’s 1-0 win over Portugal in the World Cup last 16. It was the first time the two had faced off since Silva’s exit from City this summer, and the swift reconciliation said as much about the bond built over eight years together at the Etihad as the argument itself.

A second chance for Grealish under Maresca

New City boss Enzo Maresca wants to personally assess Jack Grealish during pre-season before any decision is made on his future, rather than sanctioning the exit that had looked close to a formality under Guardiola. Grealish is expected to report back for training this week, with Everton and other clubs still circling if the trial doesn’t work out.

Gusto pursuit stalls over price

City’s move for Chelsea’s Malo Gusto — built around Maresca’s existing relationship with the full-back from Stamford Bridge — has hit a snag, with Fabrizio Romano reporting City are unwilling to meet Chelsea’s £75m valuation. Bayern Munich have also made enquiries, adding competition to a deal that looked further along a week ago.

A fresh face from the academy pipeline

Away from the first team, highly-rated 16-year-old Heaven Kilwa is set to join City from Aston Villa, turning down a new scholarship at Villa Park to do so. It continues a pattern under director of football Hugo Viana of moving early on elite academy talent before their value climbs.

Between the exits, the reunions and the recruitment further down the pyramid, City’s summer under Maresca is shaping up to be defined as much by what’s unresolved as by what’s already been done.
