Manchester City sent a club-record 19 players to the World Cup, and most of them are still involved as the tournament reaches the round of 16. Only two nations carrying City representatives have been eliminated so far.
Guardiola’s squad is spread across ten countries at this summer’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, from Erling Haaland’s Norway to Abdukodir Khusanov’s Uzbekistan. With the round of 32 drawing to a close, here is where each of City’s internationals stands.
Through to the round of 16
England — Nico O’Reilly, John Stones, Marc Guehi and James Trafford are through after a 2-1 win over DR Congo, Harry Kane’s second-half double completing the turnaround. England face co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Belgium — Jeremy Doku’s side came from two goals down to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time, Youri Tielemans scoring a stoppage-time penalty. Belgium meet the USA next.
France — Rayan Cherki and France beat Sweden 3-0 to reach the last 16 and will face Paraguay.
Norway — Erling Haaland scored the winner as Norway beat Ivory Coast 2-1. Norway face Brazil next, the toughest remaining draw for any City player left in the competition.
Still fighting for a place in the last 16
Portugal and Croatia — Ruben Dias, Matheus Nunes and Bernardo Silva face Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic head-to-head this evening in Toronto. One of the two ties will end in a City player’s elimination before the round of 16 even begins.
Spain — Rodri and Spain face Austria today, having topped their group without conceding a goal.
Algeria — Rayan Ait-Nouri’s side play Switzerland tonight, having topped Group J after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Austria.
Egypt — Omar Marmoush and Egypt face Australia on Friday, having reached the knockout rounds for the first time under the expanded format.
Ghana — Antoine Semenyo’s side play Colombia this weekend, advancing as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams despite a defeat to Croatia in their final group match.
Eliminated
Netherlands — Nathan Ake and Tijjani Reijnders are out, beaten by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32 after a 1-1 draw.
Uzbekistan — Abdukodir Khusanov’s tournament ended at the group stage, Uzbekistan finishing bottom of Group K without a win.
The bigger picture
With this many City players still involved, Guardiola’s summer plans will keep being shaped by international commitments for some time yet. Tonight’s Portugal-Croatia tie in Toronto is the most significant fixture on the immediate horizon for City fans, guaranteeing a third elimination from the group before the weekend, whichever way it goes.
