Josko Gvardiol Agrees New Manchester City Contract Until 2031

Josko Gvardiol is set to sign a new Manchester City contract running until June 2031, keeping one of the club’s key defenders at the Etihad Stadium despite recent Real Madrid interest.

The Croatia international had been linked with a possible move to Spain, but the direction of travel is now firmly towards a long-term City stay. FourFourTwo reports in a fresh Gvardiol contract update that Fabrizio Romano has said formal steps are due to follow, with Gvardiol expected to remain in Manchester rather than push for an exit.

Gvardiol joined City from RB Leipzig in 2023 in a deal worth around £77million and still had two years left on his existing contract. The new agreement would therefore give City significant control over his future during a summer already shaped by squad transition and interest in several senior players.

Why the Gvardiol deal matters for Manchester City

The 24-year-old’s value to City is obvious: he can play as a left-sided centre-back or full-back, gives the side balance in possession, and remains young enough to form part of the next defensive cycle.

Real Madrid’s interest underlined his market status, but City moving to secure him until 2031 is a clear signal that they do not view him as a saleable asset. For supporters, this is a stabilising contract update at a point when the club are trying to protect their best long-term pieces.
