Nico O’Reilly reveals how ‘gutted’ Phil Foden is to miss World Cup

Nico O’Reilly is delighted to be at his first World Cup, but he has shared how disappointed one of his club teammates is feeling.

The World Cup squad announcements were very encouraging for Man City, as they have more representatives than any other club.

In England’s team alone, there are four Citizens all competing for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s starting lineup.

However, Phil Foden missed out on a place with the Three Lions, despite appearing in both their March pre-season friendlies.

According to Nico O’Reilly, Foden is still coming to terms with missing out the World Cup, having appeared for England at their past three major tournaments.

The left-back has been complimentary of his teammate, as well as ex-Citizen Cole Palmer, who also missed out.

“I spoke to Phil [Foden] and he’s gutted [to miss the World Cup]. I’ve played with both [Foden and Cole Palmer] and they’re amazing.

“It’s unfortunate for them not to make the squad and they’ll be gutted but now is time to rest and be ready for next season.”

Foden was just coming good for Man City

There is no getting away from the fact that Foden has not had the best season. In fact, he was really poor for much of the latter stages.

However, there were signs over the past month or so that the 26-year-old was on his way to beginning a good run of form.

His performance against Crystal Palace was truly mesmerising, and it seemed like only a matter of time before he would break his goal drought.

Unfortunately, this all came a bit too late, and the reality is that Foden will not kick a ball again until City begin their pre-season preparations.

Next season is a fresh start for Foden

On a positive note, Man City will be changing things up next season with a new manager, allowing Foden to essentially start again.

The playmaker will have his chance to impress, and hopefully make his way back into the starting lineup.

And then perhaps by Euro 2028, Foden will be back in a position where he is being selected for the England national team.
