- Cherki has had a good first season at Man City
- He has announced his plans for the future
- Frenchman likely to be here for the long haul
Rayan Cherki has offered a hint on his Manchester City future, sharing one of his biggest aspirations.
Man City fans have been delighted by what they have seen from Rayan Cherki, who only cost £34m last summer.
The 22 year old’s creativity has been a joy to behold. Indeed, he created 16 big chances during his first season in the Premier League. Only Man United’s Bruno Fernandes recorded more.
In all competitions, Cherki contributed 10 goals and 16 assists. This is particularly impressive considering there were points in the campaign when he was not a regular starter.
Rayan Cherki wants to become the Man City captain
Speaking at Man City’s open top bus parade on Monday, Cherki revealed that he has plans to be the club’s captain one day.
When asked about it, he replied: “Don’t worry, I’m here for that.”
The Citizens have just had a vacancy open up, with Silva playing his final match for City against Aston Villa.
However, right now it is too soon for the France international to be considered for the role. Having said that, Steve Redmond became the club’s permanent skipper at the age of 20.
Cherki is going to be at City for a long time
The fact Cherki is talking about becoming a future Man City captain shows his intentions to be here for a while.
Having seen the legacy Bernardo Silva and John Stones are leaving behind, this could be an encouraging factor to keep him at the Etihad for longer.
And this is extremely positive for the Sky Blues, as Cherki still has many years when he ought to be at the top of his game.
Cherki is already a really good player and with added growth and maturity, he could one day reach the levels of Man City’s greatest legends.
The Man City squad is in a good place
Man City’s starting lineup in the FA Cup final had an average age of 26, but take out Silva and this reduces it a fair bit.
Four players aged 23 or under started that game, while Cherki was on the bench that day. So clearly, there are a number of young talents within the squad.
Whoever is lucky enough to inherit it will find themselves in a very good position, as this is a side built for long-term success.
