- Trafford’s game time has been limited this season
- Man City are anticipating the goalkeeper’s exit
- The club already have a replacement lined up
James Trafford could depart Manchester City after only one season, and one potential replacement has already been selected.
It has seemed almost inevitable that James Trafford will leave Man City once the summer transfer window is open for business.
The shot-stopper has not been given enough minutes in the first-team. He made only four starts in the Premier League, which caused him to spend most of the season on the bench.
And Trafford himself has confessed that he has had to try and stay positive, while enduring a season of ups and downs.
Man City could replace James Trafford with Piece Charles
There was a report last month that Man City were considering Piece Charles as a replacement for Trafford, and talkSPORT are now repeating this claim.
The ex-City academy starlet is likely to leave Sheffield Wednesday, after they suffered relegation to League One.
While City are ready to enter the race for Charles, they will have to fight off Rangers, who are also showing an interest.
Rangers could be more enticing that Man City
Charles would know that a return to the Citizens would guarantee him nothing more than some starts in cup competitions.
When it comes to the Premier League, Gianluigi Donnarumma is always going to be first choice, unless he picks up an injury.
Whereas at Rangers, he might be starting, considering the Scottish outfit will be looking for an upgrade on Jack Butland.
The Englishman impressed with his early performances at the Gers, but these days he is very hit and miss.
So by joining them, Charles could be playing an important role in competing for silverware, and participating in the Europa League.
City should not entertain selling Trafford
The fact Man City might be willing to let Trafford leave the club is preposterous! This is a goalkeeper who recently kept clean sheets in both domestic cup finals.
Trafford may well be a first-team starter for England one day, and selling him would be a very short-sighted decision.
Donnarumma is obviously one of the best around in his position, but City’s next manager needs to involve Trafford more.
Charles would be a sizable downgrade, and while he is a fair bit younger than Trafford, he has not demonstrated the same amount of potential.
Man City need to do what is required to keep their current academy graduate, because selling him would almost certainly be viewed as a mistake in the future.
