- Man City fans are used to winning trophies
- Pep Guardiola’s exit could change that
- Manager sends message about patience
Enzo Maresca looks set to become Manchester City’s next manager, and Pep Guardiola is already trying to lighten the expectations placed on his former assistant.
When Pep Guardiola arrived at Man City, he was already a proven winner at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Indeed, the manager won the treble with his boyhood club, and later went on to lift seven trophies in three years while at the German outfit.
Despite this, his opening campaign in England was void of any silverware. It was not until season two that the first of his 20 successes was recorded.
Pep Guardiola sends Enzo Maresca message to Man City supporters
Guardiola knows that success can take time, and so he has attempted to defend whoever attempts to follow in his footsteps.
The Catalan made no mention of Maresca, but if the reports are true, he likely knows that the ex-Chelsea boss will be managing City next season.
“Don’t wait to win the Premier League to be happy, don’t wait to win the Champions League to be happy. Enjoy the process,” Guardiola said, as noted by Sam Lee.
It is clear from this message that Guardiola wants City fans to have patience with Maresca, rather than expecting instant success.
So enjoy the highs and lows of the ride. Then hopefully, the Italian will eventually bring about the types of triumphs Guardiola has made a common occurrence at the club.
City are hungry to win one of the biggest trophies
Being patient is easier said than done, especially in this situation. After all, despite Guardiola’s many achievements, Man City have not won the Premier League since 2024.
Additionally, their most recent, and only, Champions League success came a year before, and they have never made it past the quarter-finals since then.
Therefore, it would be extremely difficult for the supporters to enjoy a trophyless season, or even one when the club once again fall short in the league.
This campaign was a case of so close, yet so far, and City’s fans want their team to come out on top next time around.
Even Guardiola faced pressure this season
Most Man City fans will be happy with the way this season turned out. Despite losing the Premier League title to Arsenal, two trophies are nothing to be scoffed at.
Nevertheless, it looked likely that the Sky Blues would fail to win anything a few months ago, and the pressure was beginning to ramp up on Guardiola.
The style of football was a cause of frustration, with City looking too slow and predictable with their passes.
As a result, there were some calls for Guardiola to exit the club this summer. But in the end, most would have been glad to see him stay another year.
Still, the point stands. Being the Man City manager comes with all sorts of pressure, and Maresca needs to be ready for it.
