- James Trafford pays tribute to John Stones and Bernardo Silva
- Also sends message to departing manager Pep Guardiola
- Shows appreciation despite experiencing limited role this season
James Trafford has poured out praise on Pep Guardiola, even though the manager kept him on the bench for most of the season.
Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival really made things difficult for James Trafford, who expected to be a regular starter when he joined Man City.
The 23-year-old started City’s opening three Premier League matches of the season, two of which ended in defeats.
After this, he was not handed a start until Sunday’s game against Aston Villa, which was another loss for the Sky Blues.
Despite Trafford’s lack of time on the pitch, he has delivered a parting message to Guardiola in which he does nothing except compliments his boss.
James Trafford’s message to Pep Guardiola
Trafford wrote an Instagram post which began by expressing his appreciation towards John Stones and Bernardo Silva.
The goalkeeper then turned his attention to Guardiola, showing gratitude to the Man City legend for believing in him.
“It’s difficult to find the right words to say goodbye to 3 Manchester City greats,” Trafford posted.
“What a journey it’s been sharing so many special moments on and off the pitch with Bernardo and Stonesy. I learned so much from you both and you will be truly missed.
“To Pep, thank you for believing in me, demanding more from me than I thought I had, and shaping so much of my journey as a player and as a person.
“Thank you for everything.”
Trafford performed when it mattered the most
Despite having a terrible record in the Premier League, Trafford played an important role in helping City to two domestic cup successes.
The shot-stopper was particularly influential in the Carabao Cup, making an important double stop which prevented Arsenal from gaining a first half advantage.
Trafford can be proud of his efforts this season, and while he is thankful towards Guardiola, he might be left feeling a little bemused.
After all, Donnarumma was given all the limelight in the league, regardless of form. But clearly Trafford is also very capable between the sticks.
Another chance for Trafford next season?
Last month it was pretty much viewed as a given that Trafford would leave Man City during the summer transfer window.
Even though the England international has only spent one season at the Etihad Stadium, he has not been given enough starts to remain content.
However, with Guardiola moving on, this could open up an opportunity for Trafford to play in the Premier League next season.
Having said that, Donnarumma is widely regarded as a world class goalkeeper, and Trafford will have to do something special to demote the Italian to the bench.
There is obviously the World Cup, but Jordan Pickford is likely to start for England more often than not.
In addition to this, Enzo Maresca looks likely to take over at City, and he is Donnarumma’s fellow countryman.
This does not mean Trafford has no future at Man City, but it is difficult to see how his situation will change next season, unless he pushes for a move elsewhere.
