How Pep Guardiola’s plans to stay longer at Man City were torn apart

  • Pep Guardiola announced his Manchester City exit last week
  • He originally wanted to stay at the club for a few more years
  • These plans were disrupted due to the events of last season

Pep Guardiola had a specific milestone in mind that he wanted to achieve at Manchester City, but he decided to give it up after facing a big setback.

With 20 pieces of silverware added to the trophy cabinet, Pep Guardiola leaves Man City as a true legend of the club.

The 55-year-old has poured a decade of his life into the Citizens, overseeing the most successful period in their history.

However, he had plans to stick around a lot longer, which were thrown out the window due to what happened last season.

Pep Guardiola wanted to win 10 Premier League titles

The Athletic have reported that a couple of years ago, Guardiola wanted to remain at Man City until he had won 10 Premier League titles.

This decision was partially based on his passion for American sports, and the fact he was a lover of milestones.

Additionally, it seemed a reasonable aim, considering the position City found themselves in at the time.

But after failing to win any trophies last season, Guardiola made the choice to part ways with the Sky Blues much sooner.

Based on the milestone reveal, it is possible that he deliberately decided to leave after 10 years, instead of seeing out his contract.

Guardiola could have won a lot more at City

With so many successes, Guardiola has become the second most successful manager in the history of English football.

He was still a long way behind Sir Alex Ferguson, but in fairness, the ex-Manchester United boss spent 26 years at Old Trafford.

If Guardiola were to keep winning an average of two trophies per season, he would have surpassed the Scotsman in fewer years.

Nevertheless, Guardiola’s achievements are still extraordinary, and he deserves all the praise he is currently receiving.

Man City should be able to build on Guardiola’s accomplishments

Hiring the right manager is essential to keep Man City winning for multiple years to come, and it looks like Enzo Maresca will be the man to replace Guardiola.

The Italian is inheriting an excellent squad. It is well worth remembering that they recently won both the Carabao and FA Cups.

And with a few more signings this summer to bolster the weaker areas in the team, City could be looking at a very successful season.
