Manchester City have been linked with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, but are they really that close to signing the midfielder?

Like Rodri, Enzo Fernandez has been linked with Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window.

In fact, the Argentine even missed Chelsea’s defeat to Man City in April, due to comments he made expressing admiration for the city of Madrid.

However, City are also interested in Fernandez, and it has recently been revealed that the 25-year-old is highly regarded by Enzo Maresca.

Man City are in talks to sign Enzo Fernandez

According to Ben Jacobs, informal and formative talks have taken place between Man City and Fernandez, which is a good start.

The World Cup winner wants to play in the Champions League next season, which leaves Chelsea in a weak position to renew his contract.

After all, the Blues were defeated by Sunderland on the final day of the campaign, and missed out on Europe altogether.

However, Chelsea are not willing to make a loss on Fernandez, who joined for an extraordinary £107m transfer fee.

Real Madrid could be a problem for City

Fernandez made a gesture to Chelsea fans on Sunday which indicated he was bidding them farewell ahead of the summer transfer window.

While this is obviously good news for the Citizens, Fernandez would welcome a move to Real Madrid, who will also be competing in the Champions League.

Additionally, a move back to that region of Europe could be desirable. Fernandez used to play in Portugal for Benfica, while the Spanish and Argentines have similar cultures, which includes a shared language.

Los Blancos have had a poor season, but they still managed to knock Man City out of the Champions League.

And with Jose Mourinho soon to be at the helm, the Spanish outfit will be hoping to bounce back and reclaim the La Liga title from Barcelona.

Maresca could be key to securing Fernandez

City have to ensure there is a good incentive for Fernandez to remain in England, which is where Maresca becomes useful.

The pair had a good relationship at Chelsea, and he may well enjoy working with him again at a club who have been far more successful in recent years.

Fernandez enjoyed a Club World Cup triumph under Maresca, as well as a European trophy too, even if it was only the Conference League.

Therefore, working with the Italian could be the push Fernandez needs to make the Etihad Stadium his new home for the next few years.
