  • Enzo Maresca is being framed as more than just a familiar face
  • Man City may be prioritising continuity over headline appeal
  • Guardiola’s legacy could shape the club’s biggest decision yet

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City legacy was never going to be replaced by one appointment, but the club may already know what kind of successor gives them the best chance of protecting it.

The Catalan manager has helped shape almost every part of Man City’s modern identity. Guardiola has had a hand in everything from their tactics to the academy pathway.

Likewise, City need someone who understands what has already been built. Otherwise, the Sky Blues risk losing it all if the wrong appointment is made.

On the face of it, Enzo Maresca may feel like an underwhelming name to succeed Guardiola. However, the reasons behind his possible arrival seem strategic.

Enzo Maresca seen as continuity choice after Pep Guardiola

According to The i Paper, sources have suggested that the reason for bringing Maresca back to Man City would be based on continuity.

The report states that the former City assistant “understands the journey the club is on” and will help ensure continuity across departments.

Being a former Guardiola disciple has definitely played a role in the hiring process. However, Maresca’s time with Man City’s academy might have influenced the decision further.

Maresca’s Man City past explains why his appeal

The Italian was part of City Football Academy in his first job as a manager. Previously, he’d spent a few years as an assistant under the likes of Vincenzo Montella and Manuel Pellegrini.

He was appointed the manager of the Elite Development Squad in 2020. Following the signing, the Italian gaffer helped them win the Premier League 2 title in the 2020/21 season.

However, Maresca’s time with Man City didn’t last long, just like his second stint. He left after just one season, following his first spell.

Regardless, he returned to Man City in 2022 after being appointed as an assistant to Guardiola. Maresca won the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup with the Citizens that season.

Maresca’s latest spell should not define him completely

Maresca’s time at Chelsea seems to be the biggest argument against his consistency as a manager. There were major highs as he won the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League with the Blues.

However, there was a lot of tension with the management following a drop in form. Regardless, his recent stint doesn’t completely define him as a coach.

Chelsea has been a difficult environment for several managers after the takeover of BlueCo. The American consortium is obsessed with quick results despite the manager lacking full control.

On the other hand, the City Football Group’s principles align with Maresca’s. Likewise, the Italian’s promotion with Leicester City proves his ability to work under high-pressure environments.
