- Stones was praised after Wembley
- Richards delivered an emotional message
- City fans showed their appreciation.
Manchester City’s latest Wembley triumph gave John Stones another special moment in sky blue, but one post-match exchange showed just how much his Etihad legacy means.
John Stones was put in the spotlight after another major day for Pep Guardiola’s side. The defender was praised directly by Micah Richards following the final whistle.
The former Man City right-back focused on Stones’ quality and the way he transformed his game at the Etihad.
The England international’s career under Pep Guardiola has definitely been a ride. However, following the announcement of his departure, Stones is playing his final games for the Sky Blues.
Micah Richards sends emotional John Stones message
Speaking to Stones after the FA Cup final, Richards praised the defender for the way he has evolved at Man City.
The football pundit also highlighted the Englishman’s tactical importance and impact at the Etihad over the years.
“You’ve been absolutely unbelievable for Man City. To be able to play centre-back, going to right-back, you’ve changed the game. Especially Pep, the way he wants to play,” Richards exclaimed.
He added, “When he first came to City, when he was at Everton, I was thinking, would it work? Would it work? And then you’ve absolutely grown into that role, became one of the leaders of this team.”
The most touching part came when Richards told Stones, “When you leave this club, you will be appreciated.”
John Stones appreciation goes beyond this campaign
Despite only making 16 appearances for City this season, Stones’ contributions to the club remain the central theme leading up to the departure.
The centre-back has been key to the club’s multiple major title wins. He’s also been a regular starter for multiple seasons, only falling prone to regular injuries in recent campaigns.
One of the most memorable Stones performances is probably the 2022/23 Champions League final. While playing a No.8 role, the Englishman made seven successful dribbles and won 75% of ground duels.
Despite limited experience in the position with 26 career appearances in the role, Stones was instrumental in City’s Champions League win that season.
Stones helped make Man City harder to hurt
Stones’ comfort in the midfield gave City both control and a defensive hedge. The Citizens conceded only two goals in the final five Champions League games of the 2022/23 season.
It was around the same time when Stones started playing in the midfield under Pep Guardiola. He started all five of those games alongside Rodri.
On the other hand, the FA Cup winners scored 10 goals in five games during the Englishman’s presence in the midfield.
Regardless, despite his recent injury-hit seasons, Stones’ impact at the Etihad remains undeniable and will always be appreciated by the fans.
