Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo named on Premier League player of the season shortlist

  • Premier League player of the year nominees announced
  • Two Man City stars in contention
  • Both among division’s top scorers

The Premier League have announced their player of the season contenders, and two members of Manchester City’s squad have made the vote.

Whether Manchester City win the Premier League or not, it has been some season for a number of their players.

The Citizens have not been as consistent as Pep Guardiola would have liked, but they could still have a second trophy added to their cabinet by Saturday evening.

Even based on the Premier League alone, there have been some standout players who have pushed City towards victory.

Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo receive player of the year nominees

The contributions of two Man City players have been acknowledged by the Premier League, as they have received nominations for the player of the season award.

Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo are both options in the eight-man vote which includes representatives from five different clubs.

City are one of only two teams to have more than one player nominated. Arsenal are unsurprisingly the other side, with three candidates up for the award.

Also, Pep Guardiola has been shortlisted for manager of the season, which was bound to happen when the club sit second in the table.

Haaland and Semenyo’s goals have been vital for City

With 26 goals in 34 appearances, Haaland is on his way to winning a third Premier League golden boot since he moved to Man City.

These goals have been monumental to City. In fact, they make up 35 per cent of the club’s top flight scores this season.

Semenyo on the other hand only joined in January, so most of his strikes this season were for Bournemouth.

However, the 26-year-old has scored at important moments. Semenyo netted the winner against Leeds in March, and his goal a few days later helped City pick up a point against Nottingham Forest.

Individual awards are secondary to the main prize

It is always nice to receive recognition from the supporters, but winning the Premier League will be the only thought on Haaland and Semenyo’s minds.

With only two league matches left to play, both will be required to step up and give their very best for these remaining fixtures.

Semenyo added to his goal tally against Crystal Palace, and his knowledge of Bournemouth could be handy next week.

Additionally, Haaland is in very good form, scoring in each of his four most recent Premier League appearances.

The league is in Arsenal’s hands, but City will do everything in their power to keep on winning in case the Gunners slip up, allowing them to get their hands back on the ultimate prize.
