Man City release Oasis inspired photo of Bernardo Silva and John Stones

  • Club commemorate players with photo recreation

Manchester City have released a photo of their departing stars recreating a picture many of the club’s fans will remember well.

Change is on the horizon at Manchester City, with two players already confirmed to be parting ways at the end of the season.

Bernardo Silva will leave once his contract has expired, concluding a memorable nine-year spell at the Sky Blues.

And John Stones is also exiting Man City this summer, after a decade-long stay which has seen the defender lift 19 trophies to date.

Both players have done plenty to be remembered at Man City for a number of years to come, but the club have captured an image which will make the stars unforgettable.

Kevin Cummins once took a picture of Noel and Liam Gallagher wearing City shirts from the ‘90s with the Brother sponsor.

Now, he has snapped Silva and Stones recreating that iconic photo, with Stones piggybacking his captain.

Kevin Cummins explains the Silva and Stones picture

Photographer Cummins spent many years taking photos for the Gallagher brothers, including at Maine Road, Man City’s old stomping ground.

He has explained the idea behind recreating their original image, while also paying tribute to the Citizens’ departing duo.

“Over the last decade, what’s it been like watching Bernardo and Stones? It’s been a pleasure and a privilege,” Cummins said.

“They’ve been two of the best players I’ve seen in a City shirt in their positions. Both also had iconic moments against Liverpool too!

“I loved taking their photo of course. It cements the photo in Manchester folklore – and furthers the link between City and my photography – and Oasis.

“Noel and Liam and Johnny and Bernardo are elite players in their own field,” he continued.

“It felt natural for Bernardo to be in Liam’s place in the photo, and I knew I’d made the right decision when Bernardo asked expectantly: “which of us is going to be Liam?” There could only be one answer.”

Silva and Stones will want to make it to 20 trophies each

Because Man City failed to win a trophy in 2016/17, Stones and Silva won the same number of trophies at the club, despite the defender arriving a year earlier.

Both have lifted 19 pieces of silverware, but this could become 20, or even 21, before the end of the campaign.

Man City are in the FA Cup final this Saturday, and a victory over Chelsea would be enough to secure English football’s oldest competition.

Additionally, a win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday would place City just two points behind Arsenal in the Premier League table.

19 trophies each is phenomenal in its own right, but Stones and Silva will be very keen to add one or two more before their time in Manchester comes to an end.
