Troy Deeney names Man City’s Jeremy Doku in Premier League team of the week

Troy Deeney has made his team of the week and one Manchester City player has made the cut due to his last-minute heroics against Everton.

Manchester City took control of their latest Premier League match right from the start and had lots of possession.

Eventually, this dominance paid off as Jeremy Doku fired the visitors into the lead with an excellent strike.

However, Everton scored as a result of Marc Guehi’s catastrophic error, and this was followed up by two further goals.

Erling Haaland pulled one back, before Doku levelled the scoreline in the final minute, but it was still a disappointing night for Man City.

Unsurprisingly, the Citizens only have one player in Troy Deeney’s team of the week and it is two-time goalscorer Doku.

Despite a strong overall performance, the ex-Watford striker has revealed that Doku has only made his team due to his stoppage time contribution.

Deeney told BBC Sport: “He wasn’t going to be in it until the last kick of the game. Two unbelievable strikes in the same match and one with either foot.

“He’s the most frustrating player to watch because you think ‘you are faster than everyone else – kick and run’, but he likes his tricks.”

Everton were also represented in Deeney’s team, with Vitalii Mykolenko included as he ‘wrapped up Antoine Semenyo in his pocket’.

Deeney expects Man City to miss out on the Premier League title

Without Doku’s late intervention, it was difficult to see how Man City would still have a chance at winning the Premier League.

Yet even now, Arsenal are now strong favourites to wrap things up. All they need is wins against West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace respectively and it is all over.

Deeney has recognised the importance of Doku’s 97th minute screamer, but he is still predicting the Gunners to be triumphant later this month.

He added: “When he [Doku] puts his two goals in the corner, he has kept Manchester City’s season alive because it was dead. I still think Arsenal will win it, but he has made it interesting.”

City can still have a successful season

Missing out on the Premier League title would be a huge blow for Man City, especially since it looked like they were on target to win it.

The Sky Blues went top after beating Arsenal and Burnley, which gave them the foundations to remain above Mikel Arteta’s team.

Still, City are in the FA Cup final and will face a Chelsea team who find themselves on an abysmal run of form.

Should Pep Guardiola’s side win that, they will end the season with two trophies. This is not ideal, but it is still pretty good.
