- Marc Guehi at fault for Everton’s first goal
- Defender takes responsibility for mistake
- Delivers determined message
Marc Guehi has offered a critical self assessment after he made an error which took the momentum away from Manchester City on Monday night.
Manchester City’s match against Everton was supposed to be a celebration of moving within three points of Arsenal.
The Gunners had gained a comfortable lead at the top of the Premier League table, but there was a chance for City to win their two games in hand and draw level again.
It looked like this might happen, as the Citizens entered the break with a one-goal lead thanks to Jeremy Doku.
However, Marc Guhei played a misplaced pass in the second half which landed at the feet of Thierno Barry, who equalised for Everton.
Marc Guehi admits he needs to do better
Once Everton made it 1-1 against Man City, they quickly grew into the game and ended up scoring two more goals in fairly quick succession.
The visitors managed to recover their deficit late on, but Guehi’s moment of madness still ultimately played a part in costing City their lead.
Although the 25-year-old responded with an assist, he has been critical of himself in a post on his X account.
I need to do better, but we keep going & focused on the next. Thank you for your support as always! 🩵 Thank you Jesus! pic.twitter.com/Md8GZH3D2I

Guehi is not solely to blame for Man City’s demise
As bad as Guehi’s mistake was, a number of Pep Guardiola’s players misplaced their passes and were caught in possession, particularly in the second half.
Everton conceded two more goals on the night and this was the result of poor defending from the team as a whole.
It is good to see the England international taking responsibility for his actions, but that has to be the attitude of every player on the pitch.
Monday’s performance was nowhere near good enough and without Doku, the Toffees would have won the game.
Guehi will face competition next season
Even if Guehi makes some errors, his place in the first-team seems pretty secure at the moment, considering Man City’s injuries.
Ruben Dias is still stuck on the sidelines, and Josko Gvardiol is unlikely to be fully match fit before the end of the season.
However, both defenders will be back next season, while promising youngster Vitor Reis will return from his loan move at Girona.
Guardiola will have an array of options to choose from, and that means Guehi needs to be at the top of his game.
Guehi has largely been good for City so far, but there have been moments when he has struggled, including that dreadful night in Madrid.
These are the types of performances which must be avoided if he is to continue starting on a weekly basis next season.
