  • Man City are looking ahead with Josko Gvardiol
  • Real Madrid still admire the Croatian
  • The defender’s future remains one to watch

Josko Gvardiol has become one of Man City’s most important players, and fresh claims from Croatia have now emerged about his long-term future.

Despite being out with a tibia fracture, Josko Gvardiol is still one of the most important players of Pep Guardiola’s squad.

After arriving in 2023 from RB Leipzig, the Croatian defender became an immediate starter at the Etihad. His performances speak for themselves as he’s helped with five clean sheets in 15 Premier League starts this season.

The 24-year-old can also play as a left-back apart from defending the centre. Still in his mid-20s, the centre-back will be a long-term asset for the Citizens, and they wouldn’t want to lose him at any cost.

Man City working on Josko Gvardiol contract

Gvardiol’s current Man City contract runs till June 2028. He signed a five-year deal after he joined the club in 2023.

Now, according to Sportske Novosti, City are working on a new deal for the Croatian centre-back. The plan is to extend his current deal until 2033, adding five more years to his contract.

However, the report also claims that suggestions from English sources that the deal is close to an agreement are not accurate at this stage.

The Sky Blues are planning for an extension amid growing interest from abroad. However, Guardiola’s side are keen to extend his contract in an effort to fend off outside interest.

Real Madrid remain interested in Josko Gvardiol

Los Blancos remain interested in Gvardiol as a left-footed versatile defensive option for their back. Nevertheless, his price remains a big block for the Spanish giants.

Man City paid approximately £77 million for Gvardiol’s services. Now, considering his performances in the English top-flight, the Carabao Cup winners won’t be happy with a lower valuation.

There are no reports of a release clause or an asking price from City, hinting that the Croatian isn’t for sale. However, if Madrid really want to chase Gvardiol, they’ll have to pay a fortune for his services.

Man City cannot afford Josko Gvardiol uncertainty

John Stones will leave the club at the end of the season after his contract expires. Nathan Ake is also rumoured for a move to the Serie A after falling down the pecking order in recent seasons.

Amidst this defensive revamp, Guardiola cannot afford to lose one of his regular centre-backs. Gvardiol is out with an injury, but his spot in the starting XI remains certain after his return.

Interest from abroad adds pressure, but City are in a strong position. A high price and Gvardiol’s commitment can fend off Real Madrid.
