- Inter moving closer to permanent deal
- Pep Guardiola could lose another experienced player
- Serie A side impressed by defender’s performances
Inter Milan are reportedly preparing to complete a permanent move for Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji after an impressive spell in Italy.
Man City are set to part ways with another experienced player following Bernardo Silva’s departure announcement.
The Sky Blues have seen defensive competition increase at the club in recent seasons. Last year, the club signed the likes of Marc Guehi and Abdukodir Khusanov to reinforce their focus in the back four.
Following the strengthening, it won’t be surprising to see some other members leave. With the Citizens already having four strong centre-back options, it will be hard to compete for a starting spot.
Inter ready to make Manuel Akanji move permanent
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Inter Milan are willing to turn the Manuel Akanji move into a permanent deal ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Italian journalist also reports that a fee of approximately £13m has been agreed for the defender’s services.
Akanji joined Inter Milan on a loan deal at the start of the season with an option to buy. The Swiss defender has been an indispensable part of Cristian Chivu’s side, making 29 starts in Serie A.
Akanji impressed during spell away from the Etihad
Inter Milan are first in the Serie A with 78 points. They stand nine points clear of second-placed Napoli and are well on their way to winning the league.
Needless to say, Akanji has been an important part of this dominance. The Swiss international averaged 4.16 recoveries per 90 this season.
He’s also made 185 defensive contributions through the season alongside 45 tackles and 35 interceptions. Inter has managed 14 clean sheets in his presence.
Man City set for another defensive reshuffle under Guardiola
While Akanji is on his way, there is another centre-back at the Etihad whose future remains uncertain. The decision regarding John Stones is still in the air.
The Englishman’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season. However, after following another injury-filled season, Stones’ City career seems to have come to an end.
Man City will not be renewing the defender’s contract. English, Italian and Middle Eastern sides are reported to have interest in Stones, who will leave as a free agent.
