  • Offers timeline on his return

Pep Guardiola has spoken about whether Rodri is likely to be fit when Manchester City take on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Rodri picked up a calf injury during Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal, causing him to miss their midweek fixture against Burnley.

The Spaniard’s presence was missed in the middle of the pitch, with Nico O’Reilly struggling to provide the same level of control.

However, City still managed to get over the line and move above Arsenal in the Premier League table, which is what matters the most.

Rodri will not play for Man City in the FA Cup

Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Rodri, and he has seemingly confirmed that the midfielder is back to match fitness.

Despite this, Rodri will be rested against Southampton, as the Man City manager has no interest in taking any risks.

Guardiola said: “He’s better [but we’re] not taking risks. He won’t play. We don’t want to take risks.”

Rodri’s quick recovery is a relief

Earlier this season, Rodri was struggling with a knee problem. Soon after, he picked up a hamstring injury which saw him miss out on 10 Premier League matches.

Therefore, Guardiola will be absolutely delighted that the 29 year old’s latest issue is not a long-term concern.

Rodri has been an important player to Man City this season and based on Wednesday’s team selection, Guardiola has limited faith in Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders.

Man City have important matches coming up

The FA Cup semi-final tie against Southampton is a big game for City, but it is one Guardiola will believe his team are capable of winning without Rodri.

Right now, the Premier League is the number one priority, so it is important to ensure Rodri is fit for City’s first away visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

After this, the Citizens have what are essentially four cup finals, and all their best players will be called on to help them clinch top spot after they missed out on the title last season.
