  • Man City beat Burnley
  • Move top of the league
  • Only ahead on goals scored

Manchester City have defeated Burnley, but they had to work hard in order to secure all the points on offer.

Manchester City survived an early scare from Jaden Anthony and almost scored immediately after. Rayan Cherki forced a save from Martin Dubravka, as he caused the ball to hit the woodwork.

However, City quickly began another attacking move. A long ball was played to Jeremy Doku, who put Erling Haaland through on goal. The Norwegian made no mistake with his finish, giving his team the early lead.

Burnley looked to respond instantly, but Abdukodir Khusanov was able to prevent an imminent response with a diving challenge.

Man City took control of the game and had a lot of possession. Then in the 28th minute, Nico O’Reilly came close to doubling the lead with a shot on target.

Half-time: Burnley 0-1 Manchester City

Man City lacked inspiration in the second half

Haaland had the first big chance of the second half after 55 minutes and he was not far off adding to his tally on the night. Unfortunately, the striker’s effort collided with the post, keeping Burnley in the game.

After a quiet spell, Savinho challenged the goalkeeper shortly after he came on, while Haaland skied an effort over the bar from inside the box in the 80th minute.

Nico Gonzalez took a shot on goal six minutes later, which drifted narrowly wide of the left post. It would have been quite the moment for the midfielder to score, considering he was snubbed from Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up.

Then in the 90th minute, Nico O’Reilly scuffed a close range shot, in what was a massive chance to extend City’s lead.

Full-time: Burnley 0-1 Manchester City

Man City are top of the Premier League

It may not have been a brilliant night of football from Manchester City, but they did enough to move up to first place in the Premier League table.

The Sky Blues are level on points and goal difference, but have netted more goals than Arsenal this season.

Now, their focus shifts to the FA Cup, as a win over Southampton this Saturday would see them reach the final.
