- Man City defeated Arsenal last weekend
- Fans unveiled a banner claiming Gunners were panicking
- Wayne Rooney critical of City’s post-match celebrations
Manchester City were partying hard after defeating Arsenal, but apparently celebrating wins is only okay if it is done in a certain way.
Sunday was quite the occasion for Manchester City. A team written off by the masses conquering a side who supposedly had the league title in the bag, despite their history of choking.
As a result, City moved within three points of Arsenal and a win against Burnley would see them move level on points.
Pep Guardiola’s team are now looking ever stronger and after enduring trying times, every fan in that stadium had the right to celebrate at the weekend.
Wayne Rooney criticises Man City’s celebrations
Unfortunately, there are always going to be pundits who want everyone to behave as robots and bottle up their emotions
Wayne Rooney is one of these. Speaking on Match of the Day, the ex-United striker insisted that the jubilation present at the Etihad Stadium was ‘premature’.
He said: “[The celebrations] were a bit over the top. It’s six games to go for City, it’s obviously a big win. I also think for Arsenal, they need to pick themselves up from that.
“Arsenal will be relieved that that game has come and gone and they’ve got five games left. If they win them, then they’ve got a good chance of winning the league.
“I just think it’s a little bit premature and it might come back to bite them.”
Rooney is living in dreamland
Clearly Rooney does not want Man City to win the Premier League title and his personal bias is very clear to see.
Arsenal could win the league if they win all their remaining matches. Well obviously! However, is this really going to happen?
This is a team who just lost to Southampton and Bournemouth. On top of this, they were beaten twice by Man City when the pressure was on. Arsenal simply do not have the mentality to emerge triumphant from all their remaining matches.
Whereas City are playing some very intelligent football and could realistically win each of their remaining games. Yet according to Rooney, they are going to drop points against Everton.
Celebrating is not a crime
Whether Man City go on to win or lose the league, how their fans and players choose to celebrate is no one’s business.
Football is a sport built on rivalries, and scenes like what we saw on Sunday are what contribute to making the game more interesting.
There is nothing wrong with celebrating a win or giving the opposition a bit of stick. Instead of taking issue with this, maybe Rooney should look at a form table so he knows not to spout any further nonsense about City or the Gunners.
