- Guardiola reflects on defender’s season
- Loan move appears to have paid off
- Decision on his future expected later this year
Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts on Vitor Reis, hinting at a decision on his Manchester City future.
With his season-long loan spell coming to an end, Vitor Reis is hoping to see a decision regarding his future soon.
The Brazilian joined City in 2025 from Palmeiras. However, the centre-back was quickly sent on loan to get European first-team football experience at Girona.
The Sky Blues have multiple options when it comes to the centre-back position. At 20, keeping Reis at the Etihad would’ve made no sense for his development.
However, now that the season is almost coming to an end, Pep Guardiola has offered an update regarding the defender’s future.

In the pre-match press conference before the Burnley clash, Guardiola was also quizzed regarding Reis’ future.
The Catalan manager started by praising the centre-back’s development. Then he told the press that a decision would be made at the end of the season.
“From my info in Girona, he was unbelievable. The reason why he went there, the age, he had maybe not much options to play here, he’s grown up as a player, and he did it,” Guardiola told the press.
“At the end, he’s faced the best strikers in Spain, and it’s not easy to deal with, and he’s grown a lot. People in Girona are so pleased, happy.”
Guardiola added: “The decision that’s going to happen [on his Man City future], we are going to take at the end of the season.”
Reis has become a reliable centre-back
In a recent interview, the centre-back spoke about his desire to be back at Man City. It is natural for the Brazilian to hope for a return following his performances in Spain.
Reis has become a clear first-choice option under Spanish manager Michel. He also recently received his first call-up to Brazil’s national team.
The Latin American side played Croatia, winning 3-1, but Reis didn’t get any minutes. He was named on the bench for the game.
Are Cup games viable for Reis?
Despite his development, the centre-back competition remains stiff at Manchester City. Marc Guehi, Abdukodir Khusanov, Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias aren’t going anywhere in the near future.
Nathan Ake and John Stones might leave. However, Reis still has to compete with four highly experienced defenders.
The most viable case for the Brazilian is to get another loan spell to continue his development. The other option is to play him in cup games, which could limit his growth.
