- Man City v Arsenal
- Etihad Stadium

Despite being a Premier League fixture, the much-awaited contest between Manchester City and Arsenal feels like somewhat of a final between both sides.
The onus remains on City to clinch the three points as they remain six points adrift of the North Londoners, despite having a game in hand against Crystal Palace.
However, if Arsenal suffer a defeat at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City would not only reduce the deficit between both sides at the top of the table but also deal their title rivals a seismic psychological blow.
Jeremy Doku is keen to face Arsenal and, based on City heading into the clash with three successive wins against the Gunners, Liverpool and Chelsea, it is easy to see why.
Ultimately, big games are defined by key battles on the pitch and four in particular could define which side emerges triumphant.
Antoine Semenyo vs Piero Hincapie
Antoine Semenyo made headlines after the Carabao Cup final, admitting that he gave Piero Hincapie the runaround at Wembley Stadium.
The Ghanaian told Sky Sports: “I just have that freedom to do what I want [on the right-wing], get at defenders and cause problems. And that’s what I did today, had Hincapie running around a little bit.”
Semenyo looks forward to playing against Arsenal and understandably so, having given Hincapie a torrid time recently with his pace and directness.
Pep Guardiola’s tactical setup allowed the winger to isolate the defender, particularly by deploying Jeremy Doku as a traditional left-winger. This drew Arsenal’s attention to the opposite flank, leaving Semenyo in space.
If the same pattern repeats, Semenyo’s speed and physicality could once again prove too much for Hincapie—unless Mikel Arteta tweaks his system.
Erling Haaland vs Gabriel Magalhaes
In recent years, Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes’ battles have been the stuff of legend—but the stakes have never been higher.
- Matches: 10
- Goals: 5
- Assists: 2
As the numbers suggest, Gabriel has had his share of success, often staying tight to Haaland and competing aggressively in aerial duels.
With support from William Saliba, who dominated Haaland in the Carabao Cup final, Arsenal’s defensive pairing has proven capable of limiting the Norwegian striker.
However, Haaland has a knack for decisive moments, as seen in City’s 3-1 win at the Emirates in 2023.
2026 Premier League stats:
- Matches: 12
- Goals: 3
With limited goals since the turn of the year and signs of isolation in recent matches, this could be another game where Gabriel gains the upper hand—unless City provide better service.
Matheus Nunes vs Leandro Trossard
Matheus Nunes has impressed at right-back this season, combining pace and physicality to great effect.
While Gabriel Martinelli could start, Leandro Trossard presents a different challenge due to his intelligent movement and ability to drift centrally.
Trossard’s positional flexibility could drag Nunes out of shape, especially when linking with teammates in central areas.
That said, Nunes has already handled top wingers like Vinicius Jr and Semenyo this season, suggesting he has the tools to cope once again.
Rayan Cherki vs Declan Rice
Rayan Cherki has emerged as one of City’s most dangerous attackers following a standout Carabao Cup final performance.
In a recent win over Arsenal, City repeatedly found space through Cherki, as Declan Rice focused on pressing Rodri and Bernardo Silva.
“It was to find the space on the right with Rayan Cherki… Rice likes to jump into Rodri or Bernardo, so Cherki was the free man. That’s where the goals came from.”
Arteta may adjust by assigning Rice more directly to Cherki, but that creates a dilemma.
Cherki’s freedom to roam makes him difficult to track for a full 90 minutes, and focusing too heavily on him could open space for City’s other attackers.
As a result, containing the Frenchman without disrupting Arsenal’s structure will be one of the game’s defining tactical challenges.
