- Man City were linked with rising talent last summer
- United faced key decision
- Wonderkid now attracting major attention
Manchester City were heavily involved in the situation surrounding one of Manchester United’s most exciting young talents last summer.
Manchester United’s academy has produced some of the best players the world has ever seen. In fairness, City’s academy has become equally competent in recent years.
However, the Sky Blues do nit sit still and only focus on producing their own stars. While stealing senior players directly from a local rival might be rare, it is more common when it comes to youth football.
Unsurprisingly, the Citizens were involved in a deal regarding a young Red Devils talent last summer, and they came very close to securing the player’s services.
Man City made a move for JJ Gabriel last summer
According to the Telegraph, Man City were involved in the transfer saga of 14-year-old Manchester United talent JJ Gabriel last summer.
The Citizens made a move for the teenager as they were trying to take advantage of a youth football transfer rule. At the end of their under-14s year, players are allowed to effectively leave and move to any other club of their choice.
City were very keen on Gabriel and made ‘serious efforts’ to sign the forward. However, United convinced him to continue in their academy set-up.
Gabriel keeps attracting major interest
The 15-year-old’s development has continued and his progress has not gone unnoticed, with several European giants now determined to secure his services.
Gabriel holds an Irish passport and will be allowed to play in the European Union after he turns 16. Therefore, the hurdles facing clubs across the continent will not exist for much longer.
Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all have their eyes on the teenager, so if City were to make another attempt, there would be plenty of competition to fight off.
Man City may return for Gabriel
Failing once does not usually stop the Citizens from making a move again. They may have missed out on the highly-rated teenager last summer, but a revisit could be on the cards if the opportunity arises.
After all, City are known for targeting elite young talents, and Gabriel is showing potential with technical abilities and clever dribbling.
However, the Carabao Cup winners will also be hoping that teams from across are not successful in their pursuit. With Man City have already shown their interest, perhaps this will give them an advantage in the long-run.
