- Manchester City interested in Givairo Read
- Right-back position remains a priority
- No deal agreed as of yet
Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord full-back Givairo Read as they look for someone to compete with Matheus Nunes.
The right-back position has been difficult to fill since Kyle Walker’s departure. Pep Guardiola has extensively used Matheus Nunes to plug the gap on the right flank.
Along with Nunes, the Citizens have another option in academy graduate Rico Lewis, although he has only made 11 starts this season.
Nevertheless, the England international explicitly mentioned his favourite position after signing a new contract with the club in 2025.
Unfortunately for the Sky Blues, it was not the full-back position. Instead, it was the midfield. As a result, it will not come as a surprise that Guardiola will have the right-back position as one of his priorities for the summer.
City to rival Bayern Munich for Givairo Read
Reports from Senior Sky Sports Editor Lyall Thomas reveal that Man City are closely monitoring Feyenoord right-back Givario Read.
The competition is set to be between the English giants and six-time Champions League winners Bayern Munich.
Previously, the 19-year-old had also seen interest from Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona and Brighton and Hove Albion.
Read will be expensive
Givario signed a contract with Feyenoord until 2028, back in 2024. However, when interest from other clubs started growing a year later, he futher extended his stay in the Eredivisie.
Now, the Netherlands under-21s international is contracted to the club until 2029. As a result, they in a strong position to demand a huge fee for their right-back.
Secondary sources are claiming a release clause. However, there are no reliable public sources that have confirmed its existence.
Why Givairo Read?
It is not accidental that Guardiola is looking for a full-back of Read’s profile. The 19-year-old is a high attacking output defender.
He has already assisted three times in the Eredivisie, ranking him in the top 27 per cent of right-backs in the Dutch league. Givairo also averages 4.59 touches in the opposition box per 90 minutes, which is a very high number for a full-back.
Consequently at 19, the Dutchman has the attacking profile and the age to serve as a long-term solution for City’s right side of defence.
