- Marc Guehi joined from Crystal Palace in January
- Scored City’s second goal against Chelsea on Sunday
- Defender has been hugely impressive since arriving
Marc Guehi says he and his Manchester City teammates are ready to ‘step up’ in big moments as they prepare for Sunday’s massive Premier League match against Arsenal.
The England international scored City’s second goal as they won 3-0 against Chelsea on Sunday – closing the gap to league leaders Arsenal with the two set to meet this weekend.
Victory, along with Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, means Pep Guardiola’s side are now just six points adrift of the Gunners, and still have a game in hand.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming title decider, Guehi has emphasised the need to step up and arrive at the right time in big moments, something he and others have done superbly in recent weeks.
Marc Guehi says Man City must ‘step up’ in big moments
Speaking about the upcoming battle against Arsenal, Guehi mentioned how important it has been for every player to peak at the right time.
He told the Manchester Evening News: “In these moments it’s about stepping up, the players stepping up, the team stepping up, and I said it last week, it’s about arriving at the right moment. A lot of us did that, and there were good performances from the whole team,” he said.
“Since I’ve come here, it’s been great. Every moment I’ve been here has been a blessing because I’m so grateful to learn off so many good players, so many winners and it’s important to take each game and each day as it comes.
“I think the trophy definitely gave us a lot of confidence. It doesn’t mater what trophy it is, it’s a trophy and it helps the football club so everyone is just focused on the next day, the next game and just try and be consistent as possible. “
Guehi added: “I just want to play every game, it doesn’t matter when, where or what type of game. I’m just glad to be at this football club and to be given the opportunity to do so.”
Guehi’s arrival has fixed Man City’s defensive problems
With regular defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias injured, the timing of Guehi’s January arrival could not have been timed much better.
The former Crystal Palace star joined just as City were in crisis, and he has rapidly established himself as both a key figure and calming presence at the back.
Although absent from the Carabao Cup final victory due to competition rules making him ineligible, Guehi has still played a significant role in recent weeks.
And with Arsenal next up, the 25-year-old has the chance to continue his current form and deliver another standout performance in a must-win game.
City are yet to lose a Premier League match with Guehi
It is difficult to overstate the change in City’s defensive solidity since Guehi arrived at the club. After all, the Sky Blues are unbeaten in the nine Premier League games he has featured in.
In those matches, City have conceded just eight goals, while Guehi has played a full 90 minutes on each occaision.
The defender has made an immense difference to Pep Guardiola’s side, and must continue to do so if the Carabao Cup winners are to add more silverware to this year’s trophy collection.
