- A former colleague has raised fresh doubts over Pep Guardiola’s future.
- Matthias Sammer believes something is wrong with the Man City boss.
- His comments come amid renewed speculation over a summer exit
Former Bayern Munich sports director Mathias Sammer has made a big claim regarding Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola has won 20 trophies at Manchester City, but many have been speculating on his future at the club for some time now.
Rumours reached their peak when the Catalan manager failed lift silverware during a 19-month period between 2024 and 2026. However, this trophy drought came to an end when the City defeated Arsenal in the Carabao Cup last Sunday.
Despite this recent success, Guardiola’s former colleague at Bayern Munich believes the six-time Premier League champion might be nearing an exit from Man City.
Matthias Sammar claims Pep Guardiola’s Man City future is uncertain
Matthias Sammer was Bayern Munich’s sporting director when Guardiola was in charge of the Bundesliga giants. He joined the club one year earlier than his ex-colleague and they both departed the club a decade ago.
Sammer has explained that Guardiola’s facial expressions tell a different story than the recent resurgence of the club.
“Well, first of all, I was very happy for him. We worked together wonderfully for three years; it was very, very good,” Sammer told Sky Sports on his own show, Sammer and Basile – the Hagedorn Talk.
“I think I understood him quite well with his facial expressions, his gestures, his eyes, and his way of speaking.
“My gut feeling tells me something’s wrong when I look at his face”, he added.
Sammer’s words can be seen more as advice than confident claims. The former colleague just sees how tired the Spaniard has become following 18 years of top-level football management.
“When I see your eyes, when I see your face, and in other ways too, you really don’t need to explain to clueless people what you are and who you are, and that you can’t always win.”
He added: “I would advise him to take a deep breath.”
Pep Guardiola frustrated over high demands
Following a successful stint at three top clubs, Guardiola might be on the brink of burnout. The manager has also shown frustration over the demands of managing at the highest level.
This was displayed in a recent press conference, where he said: “How many times do I hear, “Pep is a genius” for the team selection? Genius if you win. What happened in Newcastle?”
“Did you read the comments before the game [about] my team selection, on the social media? How is Rodri not playing, how is Bernardo [Silva] not playing, how you don’t play this player, how do you leave Erling [Haaland] at home?”
There have been no official announcements regarding the 55-year-old’s future, but his contract expires next year. Whether he will leave before then is still a mystery, but all should become clear soon enough.
