- Phil Foden has been benched in recent matches
- He is hoping to pick himself up again
- The international break is a chance for Foden to begin firing again
Phil Foden is eager to get back to his best after enduring a string of matches on the Manchester City bench.
Five Manchester City matches have now passed which have seen Phil Foden benched, with the Englishman last starting against Nottingham Forest earlier in the month.
Foden had been in the first eleven for most of Man City’s matches, but a drop in form has seen him suffer a tremendous fall from grace.
Most recently, the 25-year-old was brought on in stoppage time during the Carabao Cup final, which Wayne Rooney described as being like a ‘charity sub’.
Phil Foden describes his Manchester City ambitions
Although Foden was able to enjoy watching his team win the League Cup, it would have been frustrating for him not to be able to contribute to the success.
The midfielder has revealed that he is doing everything he can to get back to his best, which he hopes will lead to an increase in his minutes on the pitch.
“Football sometimes is not straightforward,” Foden told BBC Sport. “There are ups and downs and sometimes you can’t be the best version of yourself and that’s the way it is.
“It’s just about how you pick yourself back up. I’m still keeping my head down, trying to train as well as I can every day.
“Hopefully I come back after the internationals a lot sharper and hopefully I can get more minutes and be back to where I was at the start of the season.”
Foden could feature for England
The good news for Foden is that he has been included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for his national team’s upcoming friendlies.
In a few days’ time, the Three Lions will take on Uruguay and Japan and this is a great chance for the Man City star to get a much-needed start under his belt.
It is unlikely Foden will play in both matches, but just one 90-minute appearance could do his confidence a world of good.
This is a crucial time of the season for Man City and Foden has to show he is good enough to be allowed to contribute.
