“What a job he’s done for Manchester City”: Nick Summerbee heaps praise on Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has come under criticism in recent weeks, but Nick Summerbee is keen to recognise everything the manager has done for his former club.

Manchester City have experienced years of stability, with Pep Guardiola leading the team for almost 10 years.

During that time, countless trophies have been won including six Premier League titles and a Champions League.

However, Man City are likely to exit Europe’s biggest club tournament on Tuesday and the Premier League title race is looking increasingly less promsing.

This had led to rumours over whether Guardiola will decide to call it a day at the Etihad Stadium, even though his contract still has one remaining year on it.

Nick Summerbee waxes lyrical over Pep Guardiola

Ex-Man City midfielder Nick Summerbee is not convinced Guardiola will leave the club this summer and he is by no means disappointed.

Summerbee believes Guardiola has put Man City on the worldwide map and proved his doubters wrong during his time in the Premier League.

When asked if Guardiola had lost his magix touch, Summerbee told beIN SPORTS: “No I don’t think so, not at all. I don’t think he can. From what he’s achieved at Manchester City, no, not at all.

“If he walks away at the end of this season, what a job he’s done for the Premier League, what a job he’s done for Manchester City, to put them firmly on the map as a worldwide football club. They’ve just come short.

“I can only go back to when I played, it’s a million miles away to think from when I played to where they are, to the owners coming in, to [Roberto] Mancini, all the way through to Pep Guardiola, they needed someone to stamp – what are Manchester City going to be all about.

“He came over, can they do this? Spanish football with Barcelona. Can you do it in the Premier League? And he did that and more,” Summerbee continued.

“And Manchester City have their stamp, they’ve had their success and it’s about going again, whether it’s going to be with Pep, whether Pep’s going to surprise everybody and do another year.”

He added: “That wouldn’t surprise me because I think he enjoys life in Manchester and the football club, but we’ll have to see with that.”

Guardiola will always be remembered fondly at Manchester City

Staying too long at a club can risk the long-term reputational damage of a manager, but this cannot be the case for Guardiola after everything he has done.

Some might prefer to see him depart Man City this summer, but ulimately he has done enough over the years to be given the choice over his own destiny.

Whatever decision Guardiola makes should be respected and hopefully he comes to it with the club’s best intentions at heart.
