Pep Guardiola claims Manchester City do not ‘score enough goals’ after West Ham disappointment

Manchester City were held to a draw by West Ham after a number of chances to win the match were wasted in the second half, causing Pep Guardiola to react.

Football is about putting the ball in the back of the opponent’s net and this is something Pep Guardiola does not believe his side have done enough.

Man City actually have the second best attack in the Premier League, with only Arsenal scoring more goals this season.

However, they struggled to break down West Ham’s defensive set-up, scoring just the one goal thanks to a lovely dink from Bernardo Silva.

Pep Guardiola says Man City are not scoring enough

There have been times this season when Guardiola feels Man City have been denied victories which were actually deserved.

Nevertheless, because City have failed to turn chances into goals, they have dropped valuable points, which has led to Arsenal’s nine-point lead at the top of the table.

Guardiola told TNT Sports: “In modern football, playing ninety to ninety-five [minutes], being consistent is difficult.

“But our momentums are there, the stats always, except Arsenal away and United away, where we didn’t deserve anything, the rest we have been better. Unfortunately, we didn’t score enough goals – that is what’s punished us this season.”

He continued: “It’s what’s happened this season. We didn’t score enough goals when we had the quality to score. The lack of scoring goals punishes us.

“Always this team has had the ability to score a lot, a lot, a lot. I don’t know how many times we scored five goals [a game] in ten years. We have incredible stats in that.”

The manager added: “This season, we had the chances. I remember perfectly Sunderland, Chelsea at home, Brighton at home, today, and Nottingham Forest.”

Man City missed too many chances against West Ham

Many Man City supporters are frustrated not necessarily due to their team missing opportunities, but because chance creation has been lacking in general.

This is a valid point, but City really ought to have been scoring more goals against West Ham, even with Mads Hermansen making saves at such a high level.

The away team had 2.12 xG, 24 shots and 39 touches in the opposition penalty area, compared with West Ham’s five.

Quite clearly there is a serious problem with Man City’s finishing and this is a big reason Arsenal are leading the way in the Premier League.
