Manchester City had a terrible night in Madrid and Gianluigi Donnarumma was not impressed by one of the decisions which went against his team.
Gianluigi Donnarumma will have been disappointed by his performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
The Italian has been reliable for Manchester City this season, but he conceded three goals in the first half alone on Wednesday night.
Donarumma was particularly poor when Federico Valverde opened the scoring, as he abandoned his net only to pull out of a challenge which might have prevented the goal.
However, he did make a crucial second half save to stop Vincius Jr from giving Real Madrid a fourth goal which would surely have ended the tie before a ball had been kicked at the Etihad.
Gianluigi Donnarumma rebuked the referee
While Donnarumma saved Vinicius’ penalty, he was also the one who committed the foul in the first place.
Yet according to the goalkeeper, it was the wrong decision to award a penalty, causing him to criticise Maurizio Mariani, who was officiating the game.
Tutto Sport report that Donnarumma asked Mariani “Why are you acting like a big shot? You’re acting like a big shot.”
Man City were the masters of their own downfall
Donnarumma may feel hard done by as his contact with Vinicius was minimal, but the whole situation should have been avoided in the first place.
Man City committed too many men up front and were caught out by a pacey Real Madrid counter-attacking move.
Abdukodir Khusanov showcased some very weak defending, forcing Donnarumma to try and win the ball, but Vinicus knew how to win the foul.
So yes, the 27-year-old can take his anger out on the referee, but ultimately he was let down by his own teammates.
