‘It depends’: Gianluigi Donnarumma assesses Manchester City’s chances of winning Champions League

Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain last season, but he does not sound convinced that he will repeat this accomplishment with Manchester City.

There is still a long way to go until the Champions League final in Budapest, but Manchester City will have their sights set on going all the way in Europe’s biggest club competition.

Last season was a disaster for Pep Guardiola’s team, as they were knocked out by Real Madrid in the play-off round.

This time around, however, Man City are in good form going into their last 16 tie against the Spanish giants.

Better still, City have already won once at the Benrabeu this season and that was before Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo joined the club.

Gianluigi Donnarumma does not know if Man City will win the Champions League

While Man City may be feeling positive about their upcoming tie, there is a long way to go before the Champions League final.

Ginaluigi Donnarumma is well aware of this and he is also wary of the quality which still remains in the competition.

It is for this reason that the Italian seems uinsure as to whether his team have what it takes to win Europe’s most prestigious prize.

When asked in Guardiola’s pre-match press conference if City can win the Champions League, Donnarumma replied: “I think there are some teams that can make it to the final, there are many strong and tough teams.

“If you speak about last season, before the round of 16 nobody thought that PSG could be a strong candidate to win the final, but things can change overnight. It depends on the timing and how fit the team is.

“Right now we are about to play games where you are in or out. You need to manage things properly,” he continued.

“You have two games, sometimes you don’t have to put so much things at risk. Every single detail can make a difference. In the Champions League details are everything and they can make the difference.”

Donnarumma added: There are many teams that can win the Champions League, we will try to move on and make it to the end but there are very strong teams that can do the same.”

Donnarumma has not ruled out a Champions League triumph for Man City

Although Donnarumma’s answer is unlikely to get Man City supporters excited, his comments are both sensible and humble.

The 27-year-old has not ruled out the possibility of his team winning the Champions League, but he knows there is still plenty to do in order to make it to that point.

Right now, Man City’s focus must solely be on getting past Real Madrid, which is not going to be easy considering their history in the competition.

City’s road to the final will be a tough one and the only way to keep progressing is to take each tie as it comes.
